Suzette Harvey, JP B.F.A

Suzette Harvey is widely recognized as one of Bermuda’s most influential figures in the arts community. As the founder and Artistic Director of United Dance Productions (UDP), she has spent decades shaping the landscape of dance education in Bermuda, establishing standards of excellence and inspiring generations of dancers. In addition, she founded the Bermuda Dance Company, the island’s first professional touring dance company, providing Bermudian dancers with the opportunity to perform internationally and further elevating the island’s presence on the global arts stage. Her leadership and vision have made UDP one of the leading dance schools on the island, renowned for its commitment to innovative choreography, rigorous training, and community engagement.

 

Educated at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Ms. Harvey earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Education in 1990, becoming the first Bermudian to return home with a formal degree in dance. During her studies, she was honored with the Stella Moore Prize for Outstanding Achievement and the Most Outstanding Teacher Award, distinguishing her as both an exceptional performer and educator. Her expertise has been sought internationally, and she has served as a guest teacher at prestigious institutions including the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Howard University, and the University of the Arts Summer World Dance Program.

 

Upon returning to Bermuda, Ms. Harvey brought her unparalleled knowledge and passion to both public and private schools, inspiring countless students through her artistry, discipline, and love for dance. Her vision extended beyond instruction: she has dedicated her career to offering the highest level of dance training to the community, employing both local and international professional instructors, while ensuring Bermudian dancers have the opportunity to shine on the global stage.

 

In recognition of her exceptional contributions, Suzette Harvey has received numerous honors, including the Founders Award from the Bermuda Arts Council (2019), the Queen’s Certificate and Badge of Honour, and appointment as a Justice of the Peace. Through her groundbreaking work, Ms. Harvey has not only elevated the standards of dance in Bermuda but has also established herself as one of the island’s most influential cultural leaders, leaving a legacy that continues to shape the arts for generations to come.
